About
For the most comfortable experience, it is best to visit between 8:30 AM and 10:00 AM to enjoy cooler morning temperatures, lower humidity, and more active wildlife.
an ancient, UNESCO-listed 30-hectare coastal jungle that serves as the living ancestral home and spiritual sanctuary of the Mijikenda Digo community. Located just a short drive south of Diani Beach, it offers an enchanting 1.5-to-2-hour eco-cultural detour from the typical resort experience. Because it is a highly revered holy ground where locals still commune with ancestral spirits, visitors must enter with a local community guide and observe strict cultural customs—including removing headwear, wrapping a traditional black kaniki sarong around the waist, and abstaining from physical displays of affection. The easy-paced walking tour takes you under a thick canopy of 600-year-old trees growing out of ancient sea coral, highlighting rare medicinal plants, local folklore, and traditional Digo village life and dance. The independent entrance fee to tour the Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest at the gate has recently updated to KES 2,000 per person (~$15 USD) for non-resident foreign tourists. Because this site is entirely managed locally by the Digo community rather than the Kenya Wildlife Service, your fees go directly toward supporting the local village, schools, and forest preservation. Tour Type Approximate Cost What is Included Independent Walk-In (Arranging your own transit to the gate) KES 2,000 (~$15 USD) per non-resident adultCitizens/Residents pay a lower rate (~KES 200–500) A local community guide, the mandatory kaniki black sarong rental, and the 1.5-to-2-hour guided forest trail hike.
